February 28, 2012By SmileyfaxVerified PurchaseI have been a fan of the Hearts of Iron games for several years now, having owned Hearts of Iron 1, Hearts of Iron 2 and its expansions, and the Arsenal of Democracy spin-off, and I'm confident to say that Darkest Hour is my favorite incarnation of HoI2 so far.For those unfamiliar with the series, the game is a grand strategy game set before and during World War II, letting you take full control of a country's economic, diplomatic, and militaristic aspects. You're able to play as any nation, from big players like the United States or Germany, minor powers like Canada or Italy (haha), and even practical non-entities like Tannu Tuva and Guatemala.Darkest Hour brings to the table many improvements over the original game and the first spinoff, Arsenal of Democracy. The main new point of interest is a 'Decisions' system (borrowed from Hearts of Iron 3), in which you can choose when (or even whether or not) to enact events for your country, both historical and ahistorical. (There are also generic events that give modest bonuses to modifiers such as research speed and transport capacity in exchange for money). Other improvements include additions to the research, diplomacy, and intelligence portions of the game, allowing more robust play in those fields.The game also has a much-improved AI. In earlier versions of HoI2, I found the game rather easy once I mastered the fundamentals -- rare would be the case where I took more than a few months to thoroughly beat an AI country in a war. However, I've had to forfeit numerous games due to the AI improvements within the game. I don't say that as a negative -- I actually love this new level of challenge! It gives me more to aspire to, and whenever I do kick the game's butt, it's all the more sweet. One problem with the old HOI 2 game, even properly patched, was that most battles were over in a day or two which seems pretty unrealistic. This is not the case in 'Darkest Hour'. Graphics have also been upgraded and AI seems much more formidible.You will also have more options in the way of brigades which you may attach to divisions including cavalry and light/medium armor.This game will likewise permitt you to extend the struggle into the 1960's so that what began with bi-planes and tenkettes mounting machine guns will end with jet fighters and nukes. There is also a WW1 scenario which you may play in this game, I havn't tried it yet but it looks promising.What are the downsides? The developers have jiggered the I.C. values/economic resources of Italy to the point that it's even more of an economic basket case than it was in the original game. I'm not sure if they've wrecked any of the other lesser powers that used to be enjoyable to play as I've only tried Italy and currently Germany(Germany seems fine so far). The Tech trees are a bit more complex than they were in HOI 2, perhaps more complex than they need to be. One thing that really makes this game great is the ability to play all the way from 1914 to 1963, unlike the other Hearts of Iron games which only go from 1936-1948.
